India has made a remarkable achievement in social, political and economic
development in the country. While on the one hand, India is in the
fore-front in technological advancement in the world, on the other hand the
rehabilitation care for the spinal cord injury patient has not reached its
desired level. The number of spine injury cases are increasing while
necessary infrastructural development to manage these cases is negligible.
The rehabilitation Programme following spinal injury is complicated and
difficult specially in a developing country like India. As the Spinal Cord
Injury patients generally come from low socio-economic strata and belong to
younger population, the burden of society in economic terms remains very
high. It has been proved in western countries that properly rehabilitated
Spinal Cord Injury patient becomes a productive member of the society and
has the capacity to return back to the previous environment and vocation.
In the new millennium India must give a proper emphasis to the issues
related to rehabilitation of Spinal Cord Injury patients, so that their
integration to the Society becomes complete.
